Quick Reference
The moment when a planetary disk appears exactly half-illuminated by the Sun, as seen from Earth. The term is used exclusively for the planets Venus and Mercury; the same phase for the Moon is known as first quarter when it occurs between new Moon and full Moon, and last quarter when it occurs between full Moon and new Moon.
