Dickson was born at Aberlady, East Lothian in 1721, exact date unknown. He died at Whittinghame, also in East Lothian, late in 1776 of injuries received in a fall from a horse. He took an MA from the University of Edinburgh some time after 1740 and then entered the church, taking up the ministry of Duns, Berwickshire in 1750. In 1770 he moved from Duns to Whittinghame, where he remained until his death.
