An American naval oceanographer, Dietz worked on magnetic anomaly patterns in the north-eastern Pacific, and in 1961 he coined the term sea-floor spreading for his theory that new ocean floor was created at ocean ridges. He also worked on lunar cratering, and recognized craters on Earth as being of meteoric origin.
