The name given to the two hundred hereditary priests who own and operate the Śaiva temple complex at Cidambaram in Tamil Nadu. Said to be descended from brahmin migrants from North India, they conduct the elaborate daily pūjās and an extensive calendar of festivals according to Vedic rather than, for Śaivas, the more usual Tantric rites. They are assisted in this by five families of Aiyar smārta brahmins.
