A genus of trees and shrubs in which the showy flowers have 5 sepals and petals, numerous stamens developing centrifugally, and numerous carpels. The seeds are often arillate. Some species are cultivated as ornamentals, and some yield useful timber. There are about 60 species, occurring from the Mascarenes and Indo-Malaysia to the Pacific islands.
