A chemical entity consisting of an association of two monomeric subunits; e.g., the association of two polypeptide chains in a functional enzyme. If the two subunits are identical, they form a homodimer; if nonidentical, they form a heterodimer. Hexosaminidase (q.v.) is an example of a heterodimeric enzyme.
