Founder of the Zulu kingdom. In 1807 he became chief of the Mthethwa in the present northern Natal. By conquering neighbouring Nguni peoples he made himself paramount over all surrounding groups and established a rudimentary military state, developing trade with Mozambique. He had already designated Shaka as his successor when he was assassinated by Zwide, chief of the Ndurande clan of the Zulu, in a rebellion against his rule.
