Educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and at London University. After extensive travel and studies in various fields, including psychical research and anthropology, he became, in 1946, honorary assistant keeper at the British Museum. He worked on the Private Case, dealing with restricted materials, chiefly erotica (seepornography), and did much to bring order to this collection, which he also enlarged.
