(subclass Synapsida, order Pelycosauria)
A large, specialized, meat-eating reptile from the Early Permian of N. America. Dimetrodon grew to over 3 m in length and is noted for the presence of a large sail on its back. The skull of this carnivore was high and narrow, with the teeth differentiated and well adapted to predatory habits.
