An extinct family of large, emu-like ratites, the largest being 3 m tall. They had no wings, and were herbivorous and ground-nesting. They became extinct during the last few hundred years, some possibly surviving into the 19th century. There were at least six genera, with 19 species, confined to New Zealand.
