A family of herbs or low shrubs, resembling the Asteraceae but with opposite leaves. Each floret in the head has its own involucre of united bracts, the stamens are exserted, their anthers on long filaments. There are about 8 genera, with 250 species, occurring mainly in southern Europe and western Asia.
