Quick Reference

Used to describe a variety of roles in schools, colleges, and universities, so that the precise definition will depend upon the institution and the context concerned. In a large school this title may denote the senior member of staff responsible for coordinating the teaching and learning. In some institutions it might be used to indicate responsibility for a particular curriculum area and involve duties of the sort associated with a departmental head. In higher education it is often used as a term for the principal supervisor of a doctoral research student, to distinguish them from other members of the supervisory team. The title may therefore, according to context, indicate a whole‐institution responsibility, a departmental leadership role, or small‐team academic leadership.
