Quick Reference

A server which dispenses data about the resources in a client server computing system; it provides a directory service which is a key component of a networked system. If a directory server fails, then the whole network fails: as a consequence there are usually a number of directory servers found in a network, each using data replication schemes to ensure that if a server malfunctions an up-to-date database of resources is available for any backup server.
