A susceptibility gene in the 1q42 chromosomal region for mood disorders and schizophrenia, originally identified in a large Scottish family. The DISC1 gene is predicted to encode a multifunctional 854-aa protein involved in intracellular transport, the determination of neurite architecture, and/or neuronal migration. Highly expressed in olfactory bulb and dentate gyrus of hippocampus, both areas in which adult neurogenesis occurs. Binds NDEL1. DISC2 apparently specifies a single exon, thought to be a noncoding RNA molecule that is antisense to DISC1.
