(subclass Actinopterygii, order Cypriniformes)
A family of African freshwater fish that have a deep body, a rather produced, ‘pointy’ snout, a soft-rayed dorsal and an adipose fin, and a forked tail fin. A few genera (e.g. Citharinus) are also placed in a separate family, the Citharinidae.
