A degeneration or loss of muscle mass resulting from inactivity. It can lead to paralysis if muscles are reduced less than one-quarter of their original size. Connective tissue consisting mainly of dense collagen fibres replaces the muscle making complete rehabilitation impossible. See also principle of disuse.
