Modern dance work in one act with choreography by Graham, music by Dello Joio, set by Noguchi (abandoned after the first performance), costumes by Graham, and lighting by Rosenthal. Premiered 13 Aug. 1948 by Martha Graham Dance Co. at Connecticut College, New London, with O'Donnell, Lang, McGehee, Hawkins, and Cohan. It is one of Graham's few purely lyric works. It tells no story but celebrates the passions of youth, love, and dancing. Its original title, Wilderness Stair: Diversion of Angels, was taken from a poem by Ben Belitt. It was revived by American Ballet Theatre in 1999.
