A special, synthetic form of phenylalanine taken by injured athletes in the belief that it prolongs the painkilling effects of endorphins (natural chemicals secreted by the brain in response to injury). DLPA is thought to inhibit the enzymes that normally break down endorphins.
Some people are sensitive to phenylalanine and related chemicals. DLPA should on no account be used during pregnancy or by those who suffer from phenylketonuria. See also phenylalanine.
