Quick Reference

The postulation that, when averaged across the entire genome of a species, the rate of nucleotide substitutions in DNA remains constant. Hence the degree of divergence in nucleotide sequences between two species can be used to estimate their divergence node (q.v.). See Chronology, 1983, Kimura and Ohta.
