Despite the name, these are RNA polymerases (RNA primase, EC 2.7.7.6) that catalyse the synthesis of short (~10 bases) RNA primers on single-stranded DNA templates. These primers are used by DNA polymerase to initiate the synthesis of Okazaki fragments on the lagging strand. Eukaryotic DNA primase is a p60/p50 heterodimer with little homology to prokaryotic primases and forms a complex with DNA polymerase-α.
