Any process of DNA exchange in a sexually reproducing organism that produces chromosomes containing new combinations of genes not found in the cells of either of its parents, especially the rearrangement of genes resulting from independent assortment and crossing over. Also called genetic recombination or simply recombination. Often confused with recombinant DNA.
