A virus in which the genomic material is in the form of double- or single-stranded DNA. Group I viruses possess double-stranded DNA and include, among other families, the Adenoviridae, Herpesviridae, Papillomaviridae, Polyomaviridae, Poxviridae, Mimivirus, and many tailed bacteriophages. Group II viruses possess single-stranded DNA and include families such as the Parvoviridae and bacteriophage M13. See DNA tumour virus.
