NT scholar. He held professorships at Manchester and Cambridge. His theory that Christ regarded the Kingdom of God as having already arrived with His ministry (‘realized eschatology’) was widely discussed. From 1950 he was General Director (from 1965 Joint Director) of the NEB (see Bible, English versions, 5); he played a major part in translating the NT.
