‘the elder’, theologian. In 1688 he was appointed Camden Praelector of Ancient History at Oxford. He contended that the replacement of the Nonjuring bishops was uncanonical and was deprived of his post in 1691 when he refused to take the Oath of Allegiance. He was one of the foremost Nonjuring apologists.
