Sea areas in which the winds are light and variable and sailing ships are likely to be becalmed, although the calm weather is periodically interrupted by fierce storms. The doldrums occur inside the Intertropical Convergence Zone, in three principal areas of the eastern Pacific, western Pacific, and eastern Atlantic. The extent of these areas varies with the seasons. The word ‘doldrums’ came into use in this sense in the middle of the 19th century.
