Quick Reference

Any of a group of long-chain mostly unsaturated organic compounds with a varying numbers (13–24) of isoprene units and a terminal phosphorylated hydroxyl group, biosynthetized by the general isoprenoid pathway from acetate via mevalonate and farnesyl pyrophosphate. Dolichol can be post-translationally added to proteins and also has an important role as a transmembrane carrier for glycosyl units in the biosynthesis of glycoproteins and glycolipids. Dolichol accumulation in tissues has been suggested as a biomarker for ageing.
