The process whereby an individual, organization or business registers a domain name. This is usually carried out via a third party known as a domain name registrar. Most registrars offer a Web-based service and all that is necessary to register a domain name is to supply technical and contact information through the site. Each registrar sets a charge for this process. From January 2000 registrars are allowed to offer an initial registration period and renewal periods which are no longer than ten years in total.
