A Brahmin who presided over the division of the Buddha's relics. He avoided a dispute among the local kings who arrived to claim the Buddha's remains by reproaching them for quarrelling and urged them to remain calm out of respect for the recently deceased teacher. He then divided the relics into eight parts and gave one to each king to take away. He retained the vessel used to collect the relics and built a stūpa over it on the site.
