Ballet in one act with choreography by Balanchine, music by Donizetti, costumes by Karinska, and lighting by Hays. Premiered 16 Nov. 1960 by New York City Ballet at City Center, New York, with Hayden and Watts. This setting of music from Donizetti's opera Dom Sébastien de Portugal was originally titled ‘Variations from Don Sebastian’ and is choreographed for a principal couple and a corps of six women and three men. It has been revived by several companies including Hamburg State Opera (1967) and American Ballet Theatre (1984).
