The merchant seaman's name for his mattress in the days when it was normally stuffed with straw. These mattresses were used by seamen right up into the 20th century in a majority of ships until the growth in the power of the trade unions and the passage of the Merchant Shipping Acts in Britain, or their equivalents in the various maritime countries, which led to their abolition.
