Quick Reference

A small auxiliary engine with its own small boiler employed during the early days of steam propulsion aboard ship. It was used for furnishing power for a variety of smaller mechanical duties in harbour for which it would be uneconomic to produce steam from the main boilers. It was accommodated on deck in what was appropriately called a donkey-house.
