dooiney oie

Quick Reference

[Manx, night-man].

Benign, nocturnal spirit of the Isle of Man who warns mortals of impending storms. He may shout his warning, speak while making a misty appearance, or use a loud horn; in either instance, farmers are warned to herd cattle and sheep into a shelter. Virtually indistinguishable from howlaa, who howls a warning but does not speak; alternatively, ‘howlaa’ may be what dooiney oie shouts.
