dormant account

Quick Reference

An account on a networked system which has not been used for some time. The two most common reasons for this are that the user who owns the account has left the organization that runs the system, or that the user cannot use the account, for example during a period of hospitalization. Dormant accounts are often targeted by intruders who can use them as a springboard into a networked system. They are particularly attractive to the intruder since the user associated with the account is unaware of any unusual activity associated with the account such as the creation of new files.
