A genus of herbs in which the flowers are borne on, or sunken in, a disc-like, flat, or concave receptacle, often more than 2 cm across, and are unisexual and minute. When ripe, the fruit is ejected by the receptacle becoming turgid. There are 170 species, occurring in the tropics.
