Quick Reference

The version of the Bible used by English-speaking RCs until modern times. It was the work of members of the English College at Douai. The NT was published in 1582 at Reims (whither the college had temporarily migrated), the OT at Douai in 1609–10. The translation was made from the Vulgate and is very literal. Modern editions are based on the revision made by R. Challoner in 1749–50.
