Quick Reference

The simultaneous production of tension in an antagonistic pair of muscles. The double pull is essential for normal movement of a body segment: when one muscle shortens, its opposite partner produces a counter tension to hold the body segment in place. However, the production of excessive counter tension can interfere with the performance of a skilled movement; this can be avoided by differential relaxation.
