(b. 22 Mar. 1857, d. 7 May 1932).

President of France 1931–2 He became a Radical member of the Chamber of Deputies in 1888, Secretary of Finance in 1895, and from 1896 to 1902 he served as Governor‐General of Indochina, where he modernized the colonial administration. He became a nationalist symbol after he lost three sons in World War I. He was Secretary of Finance again between 1921–2 and 1925–6. He was murdered by a Russian émigré, Gorgoulov.
