American poet, born in Akron, Ohio. Her collections include The Yellow House on the Corner (1980), Thomas and Beulah (1986), Grace Notes (1989), and Mother Love (1995), a powerful lyrical exploration in varied 14‐line stanzas of the resonance of the Demeter/Persephone myth, rich in classical allusion, personal emotion, and contemporary colouring. Through the Ivory Gate (1992) is a novel. She was the USA Poet Laureate during 1993–5, and since then has published On the Bus with Rosa Parks: Poems (1999).
