*Message sending, and information flow, within organizational hierarchies from superiors to subordinates, often taking highly directive forms such as instructions and orders. Such communication reinforces the hierarchical nature of organizations. It is characteristic of an organizational structure termed ‘mechanistic’, in which roles are clearly defined.
