Quick Reference

1 Sometimes written as draft, the depth of water a ship draws, which of course varies according to how heavily it is loaded. The legal maximum draught for British ships used to be the Plimsoll Line, but load lines, with metric markings, are now governed by an international convention drawn up by the International Maritime Organization.
