Dresden Sketchbook

Quick Reference

Volume of 15 paper leaves containing 23 drawings of vaults and their projections and 2 alchemical drawings of distillation furnaces (Vienna, Österreich. Nbib., Cod. vind. min. 3). The paper, of which 29 pages measure 374×253 mm and one folio measures 490×370 mm, bears a watermark that is recorded in Dresden and Leipzig between 1544 and 1567. The drawings were executed with the help of grids incised into the paper. The vault projections were sketched in ink, and some are coloured in green, red, sepia and light brown. The alchemical drawings are coloured in blue, yellow and red. The designs give basic procedures for the calculation of lengths and curvatures of the different members of a Late Gothic vault, including complex vaults with interpenetrating ribs and doubly curved elements. Some of the vaults have been identified as north-east German and Bohemian in style.
