Italian composer and conductor. He was conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg (1886–1917) where he led the premieres of Sleeping Beauty (1890), Nutcracker (1892), and his re-orchestration of Swan Lake (1895). He composed scores for several ballets, including Petipa's The Talisman (1889) and The Pearl (1896) and Ivanov's The Magic Flute (1893). He also edited and amended scores for older ballets, such as Le Corsaire.
