(1892–1975), OT scholar and Semitic philologist. The son of S. R. Driver, he was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow of Magdalen College in 1919 and held the title of Professor of Semitic Philology from 1938 to 1962. He was intimately concerned with the New English Bible (see Bible, English versions, 5), translating several Books and acting as Convener of the Old Testament Panel from 1957 and Joint Director (with C. H. Dodd) from 1965. He was knighted in 1968.
