In Commonwealth days when stage plays were forbidden, were farces or comic scenes adapted from existing plays or invented by the actors, produced generally at fairs or in taverns. Most were published after the Restoration by Francis Kirkman in The Wits, or Sport upon Sport (two parts, 1662, 1673).
