A large vessel of the Mediterranean which operated between the 9th and 15th centuries. Byzantine in origin, the name was at first used to denote a royal ship, but came into general use as describing any very large ship propelled by many oars and with a single mast and a large square sail. They were used principally for trade or as transports in war.
