Particles from 1 to 5 microns in size that are the desiccated residue of liquid aerosol drops or droplets emitted in coughing, sneezing, or speaking, comprising dehydrated mucous secretions that usually contain viable microorganisms, including pathogens. Some disease agents, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis, can survive for long periods in droplet nuclei and cause disease when they eventually invade a susceptible host.
