Quick Reference

An instrument package (similar to a radiosonde) that is designed to be deployed from a manned or unmanned aircraft where meteorological data are required, such as in areas within a tropical cyclone. The descent is controlled by a parachute. Two versions are commonly employed, the first reporting pressure, temperature, and humidity (PTU) readings, and the second having the additional capacity for position-finding from GPS or LORAN signals, from which wind vectors may be obtained. The latter form is sometimes referred to as a dropwindsonde.

Subjects: Meteorology and Climatology.
