British writer, television producer, administrator, and dance activist. He was writer, editor, and producer at the BBC (1958–78) during which time he created two seminal documentaries on artists associated with Diaghilev, whose interviews are recorded in Speaking of Diaghilev (London, 1997). As director of the Edinburgh Festival (1978–83) he was responsible for enlarging its dance programme and in his various roles as Director of the BBC Proms and Controller of Music for Radio 3 was responsible for raising the profile of dance on radio. He was active on many dance committees, also governor of both the Royal and Birmingham Royal Ballets.
