Of 15th- and 16th-century printing, whose work set new standards of accuracy. His major publications include a three-volume catalogue of the printed books in the John Rylands Library (1899), of which he was the first librarian (1893–1900); the biographical dictionary A Century of the English Book Trade, 1457–1557 (1905), which inspired Plomer’s biographical dictionaries for later periods; and the bibliography Fifteenth-Century English Books (1917). A bibliography prize at Oxford University is named after him.
