US astronaut. He was the lunar module pilot of the Apollo 16 flight in April 1972. During the mission, he and John Young stayed for more than 71 hours on the Moon's surface, collecting 118 kg of lunar rock and soil. Duke was selected as an astronaut in 1966 and left NASA in 1975.
